This area is often called “the cradle of mountain tourism” and offers many great places to start your first mountain hike. In Storulvån you can do day hikes on Getryggen and on the trail towards Ulvåtjärn and Blåhammaren. In Vålådalen you hike on Ottfjället and in Åre you can climb Åreskutan, where there are also a wide range of other activities. If you’re seeking mountain hiking with overnight accommodation in different places along the route, Storulvån is a good starting point. For example, here you can choose the classic Jämtland Triangle or hike Storulvån – Ljungdalen. On this hike you’ll encounter the mountain ranges of Sylarna and Helags. At both mountains there is a mountain station where you can stay an extra day or two to take in the peaks. Vålådalen is also a good starting point for mountain hiking between mountain huts and mountain stations.
We have devised a couple of day and multi-day hikes that we recommend for your first mountain hike.
Getryggen day hike – 12 km
Immediately adjacent to STF Storulvån Mountain Station you can start an easy hike up Getryggen. This is the start of the marked trail, also called Blomsterstigen (the Flower Trail). And there’s a wide variety of mountain flora to explore and learn about as you hike. An easy hike up to 1200 m, which then turns into a slightly steeper climb. If you want to reach the top, a well-trodden path continues, but it isn’t marked. At the top you get a great view from 1383 m above sea level.
