The hike to Silverfallet starts with crossing the suspension bridge over the Grövlån River, and then continuing along the trail marked Silverfallet. The hike covers 7 km in total, and follows a trail marked with red winter trail crosses. You walk surrounded by mountain forest, with a little marshland, but also hike a little way up into the alpine zone. After around 3 km you arrive at the small Silverfallet waterfall, which is a perfect spot for a picnic at the Olån shelter. There’s also a fireplace for a barbecue, but make sure you take your own kindling. Follow the blue-marked path towards Hävlingen. You’ll pass an old Sami summer camp, then follow the stream towards the peak. Eventually, you’ll see the mast, which you can aim for. And you’ll soon be at Jakobshöjden. This is an easy 7 km hike, but be prepared for a fair bit of stone along the path in places. Once you’re up on the peak, you’ll find a shelter. This is locked, but it still provides good shelter for a tea break.

Hike length
7 km

Accommodation in Grövelsjön
STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station

Hävlingen – 26 km t/r

A multi-day hike that takes you to Lake Hävlingen where there are huts you can stay in. From STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station you hike north for 13 km over the mountain, starting out by following the blue-marked path towards Hävlingen. You pass Jakobshöjden on the route, and it’s well worth taking a short detour to reach the top. Once you reach Lake Hävlingen and the mountain huts, you’ll also find a warming sauna and the opportunity for a rather chillier swim.

Hike length
26 km

Accommodation in Grövelsjön
STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station

Accommodation during the hike
STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station, Hävlingestugorna (book through Länsstyrelsen)

Shops during the hike
STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station

Map
W51 Lantmäteriet 1:50 000
Grövelsjön & Rogen Calazo 1:50 000

Getting there
Bus from Mora to Grövelsjön. You set off for Sylen, which is at the north end of Lake Grövelsjön. In Sylen there is limited accommodation which must be pre-booked. Alternatively, you can take a boat and start hiking straight for Hävlingen. If you choose to hike the whole way, the trail runs to the west of the lake up towards Salsfjellet, and then town to Sylen. From Sylen the summer trail goes east, first a little way surrounded by forest then through the alpine zone almost all the way to the fishing camp at Hävlingen. On the way you pass Lake Grötvallsjön, where there is a reindeer separation enclosure. It’s recommended that you book accommodation at Hävlingen in advance. Boats and canoes are available to hire.
From Hävlingen, the trail continues over Långfjället’s heathland and marshes. You get a good view of Storvätteshågna (1183 m).
